Paddling in lake Philippe today, I spotted a trio of weasel like creatures peeking at my boat from ~ 10 m away. They only stuck their heads and necks out of water, so I first took them for stubs of pipes or dead branches. But, they dived and popped in and out several times until I left. Usually creatures like river rats etc tend to run (swim) away from the boat, but these guys seemed to be curious. Any ideas?

Sounds like otters to me too. In a family group, long necked, curious, all are otter characteristics.

River otters were successfully re-introduced into upstate New York water systems about 10 years ago.

Could be they made their way over to Canada. Or the ones you saw were indigenous.

They do seem to like humans. There's a wonderful book and movie called 'Ring of Bright Water' detailing encounters between the author and a sea otter.

There are LOTS of river otters in this area, and it definitely sounds like that is what you saw. Most other critters just want to get on their way. Otters are curious...and quite cocky. They aren't afraid because they can swim circles around you.
