Anyone,
I was on a outward bound adventure about 10 yrs ago. we were on a river and there was a thunder storm around us. as we got off the water and sat on our lifejackets one of the instructors had a way to tell how far the electric storm was from our position. I am trying to remember the method. can someone verify the following
from the flash (of lightning) to the crack (of thunder), for every 5 seconds the storm is 1 mile away.
It was real nice to know if the storm was advancing or retreating from us. Is this about right?

Short answer: Yes, 5 seconds = 1 mile
Longer answer: The speed of sound is about 330m/s, whereas the speed of light is pretty much instantaneous. So for every 1 second between the lightning and thunder, it is 330m away. Or for every 5 seconds 1650m (about a mile).
