Staring into space at the Dr office, I was thinking about paddles and there value, and what makes them worth the $ for the paddlers out there. What is more important to you - Consistency, and performance or would you pay more for a paddle that performed as well of course but was hand made by a craftsman? Would that carry any weight in your decision, and would you be prepared to pay a bit extra for it?

As I carve my own paddles the answer is craftsmanship (I am a greenlander guy and use one of those skinny sticks) But with commercial paddles its a few things. 1st craftsmanship 2nd what is it made from ie: carbon fiber, fiberglass, wood and thirdly the paddles reputation amonst paddlers. You see if everyone is using it there must be a reason why therefore I will consider paying a little more for that paddle. Jules

Not to mention making your own is a great winter project in the northern countries.

I have paid 400 dollars for a paddle, but take great pleasure in making my own
