from my research for my own rack needs I'd say you can easily find a kit made by thule...

What kind of kayak do you have? Both Thule and Yakima make some good (albeit expensive) cradle and saddle systems for river and sea kayaks. Check out autoracks.com. I use the Thule hull-a-port cradles for my 14.5' kayaks - they work great. If you want a low-cost solution, foam pads and tie-downs are probably the cheapest way to go.

Continuing the Thule and Yakima line, if you have rain gutters, both companies make towers that will fit onto the gutters. If you don't, Yakima (and probably Thule as well) make tracks that can be mounted on the roof and then moveable racks that mount in the tracks. Yakima's mounting system involves drilling holes in the roof but is all done from the outside and includes rubber gaskets and silicon seals to make a waterproof job. I've installed four sets of these tracks with no problems in a total of about 250,000 miles.
