Greetings, I was recently given a 16' wood canvas Chestnut canoe. The canvas is shot, the gunwhales need to be replaced but otherwise is in not too bad of shape. Can anybody point me in the right direction as far as supplies and how-to. I've been searching on-line but am finding nothing in Northwestern Ontario as far as classes or workshops, but would really like to do this right. Any suggestions?

TIA, Julie Scott BTW is there a more appropriate newsgroup I should have posted in?

Try buying a copy of'The Wood&Canvas Canoe'by Jerry Stelmok&Rollin Thurlow. Its a great book on construction, maintenance&restoration.I couldn't find it at Chapters or any where else local(Ottawa area) they all told me it was out of print. However I purchased it online thru Amazon.com & it was cheaper than cdn. prices and arrived within 8 days. Good luck.

Or check out the Canadian Recreational Canoeing Association. The Wood and Canvas Canoe is listed there for $21.95CDN if you are a member, $22.95 if not. You can either drive to Merrickville and pick it up (may be worthwhile to phone first to ensure they have stock) or get them to ship it to you.

Go to http://www.crca.ca/ then select Paddlers Bookstore and then select the Boat Building section. There are 26 books listed.
