Anyone paddled there?

My wife and I are planning to go later this month. I might be losing my touch, but I did lots of surfing and although there is some vague info on the web about the area, I couldn't find much in the way of specific information about sea kayaking trips. All I have figured out so far is you are supposed to stay the hell away from the tip of the peninsula which apparently produces some wicked riptides and such. If you can share some personal experience about the area or point me to some links that would be greatly appreciated.

Pelee Wings rents kayaks and sells all kinds of outdoor gear, specializing in optics. I am sure they can steer you in the right direction.

I've been there many of times.... live not far way. There is canoeing/kayaking in the marsh. You can pretty much cover the marsh area in a casual morning or afternoon. Kayaking around the park shoreline (in lake Erie) would be a more lengthy experience.... and yes, stay clear of the point. Lake Erie can get pretty rough, however the wind prevails on the west shoreline, while the eastern shoreline is often quite calm in comparison. You could also consider paddling the Hillman Marsh Conservation Area as well - it is only about a 20 minute drive east of Point Pelee (between Leamington and Wheatley on the Lake Erie Shoreline). Like Bill suggest, call Pelee Wings and I am sure they can give you all the skinny.

We are staying right near the Hillman Marsh and will of course do the marsh in the park as well.

Is taking the ferry out to the island and circling the island a good idea?

We are actually looking forward to some rough water. It's nice to actually use your sea kayak for what it is intended once in a while

So, it sounds like we could paddle in the Hillman Marsh and from there go right out for a paddle on Lake Erie? Anything interesting to see on the Lake Erie shoreline?

Thanks!

The Hillman Marsh can be very good for shore birds, depending on the water level. Lots of great birding in the area. The Park has lots of publications.
