For ultra low budget canadian canoe, I've seen ply stich & tape plans on the net. Some have a butterfly design, some are cut from pointed 'planks' which fit together to make a curved bottom to the boat.

Anyone ever made or paddled one of these things?

Is it worth the time & effort or should I spend the time in a part time job & save the money to buy a decent one??!!

Do it youself curved bottom canoes are made from cedar strips and cost a lot more than flat-bottomed ones made from sheet plywood. Take more time as well. Get the book 'Canoecraft' from your local library for details on cedar strip.

What do you want the canoe for? If paddling in quiet waters a flat-bottomed one may be all you need.

Hi

What does the typical stich and tape canoe (15 ft) weigh-in at?

Thanks,

According to the many web pages, they range from 30LB up, depending on how strong you want it to be. The stronger you want, the thicker the ply, and more layers of Glass & resin, therefore the heavier the boat.

Here's me speaking like I know what I'm talking about... I wish!

You do realise that now that I've seen the Selway Fisher site, I'm going to have to build one. This could seriously jeopardise my marriage
