I'm looking to buy a new paddle for canoeing. What should I be looking for? Most of the paddling I do is flatwater. What types of wood? How do I figure out how long a paddle to get? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Virginia;

We were always told at camp that when we stood our paddle on our foot upside-down, the end of the paddle should be between our nose and chin.

I suppose that would be a wildwater paddle. Flatwater paddles are longer. Reach your arm above your head. Between your fingertops and the ground would be a reasonable length for your paddle.
