I went kayaking for first time last month and really enjoyed it. Everything I've read about it suggests this is something you shouldn't do alone, though. Is that true, or only true of sea kayaking? Seems like spending a couple hours paddling around a lake by yourself shouldn't be a big deal??

Depends on the lake. Pretty Pond is one thing, Superior is another. I think the no solo injuction is meant to apply to white water and open

If you are reading sea kayaking books, often it will be said that the minimum number of paddlers is three, but that is generally in reference to being on the ocean or other large bodies of open water.

Obviously any activity is going to have added risk if you are alone, as someone else pointed out. But provided you are taking all the usual precautions, paddling by yourself on a lake (and I don't mean Lake Superior) is definitely no big deal. Wear a PFD. Know where you are. Know the conditions.

You'll need to be able to wet exit (fall out of your kayak when it is turned over in the water) which is not hard to do but someone who is uncomfortable being underwater could possibly panic and have problems.

I see solo kayakers all the time on the lakes and rivers in the Ottawa area.

Have fun,

Keenan

One probably should not paddle alone if one is dead.
