I'm looking for tips on packing food for trips. I am used to canoe tripping and am worried about fitting everything into our new touring kayaks this summer. Any advice? Do any of you use dehydrators? Have you had good or bad experiences with them?

We use an American Harvest Snackmaster Pro dehydrator for food on all our trips. It works great and have never had anything go bad yet. You can really make some delicious meals out there with dehydrated veggies and hambuger (cooked).

Weight saved with dehydrated food is nullified by the need to carry a tent for each person

Dehydrated food itself doesn't cause gas! Perhaps it was what you made

You've made previous refeences to feeding the crows. Given the large flocks that sometimes descend upon some spots, and the serious nuisance that they are in some towns and cities (Chatham, Ont. and Kentville, NS., for example) I was wondering why you have been doing this. Crows certainly do very well for themselves in the city, and do not really seem to need handouts.

I also do not think that dehydrated food is any more likely to cause gas, but Doug's point about calories is well founded. Since fat or oil does not dehydrate and can cause the food to go rancid, dehydrated foods tend to be pretty low fat/calorie. We compensate by carrying a supply of olive oil to add to our meals.

What type of dehydrator do you use? What do you dehydrate?
