We went for a late-evening paddle across Constance Bay and up the creek. The sun dropped really fast and we found ourselves in very low light. We were expecting to see quite a low of wildlife, but it was pretty quiet. No deer, one heron, and several beavers. Just when we were going to turn back, some sort of critters were moving off to the side near the weeds. One of them was making a sort of a snorting noise. Strange. Turns out is was a pair of river otters! As the usually do, they put on a great show, swimming sideways with their bodies thrust way up out of the water, and totally humiliating us with their swimming ability. They'd be right in front of us, then they'd disappear and show up way downstream. Then suddenly they'd be right alongside. Amazing creatures!
The light was terrible, but I tried to get some pictures. The photos I took without flash came out very blurry. The only flash shot makes the otter look like a little ghostie!
Below is a photo of Julie moving upstream with about five minutes of light remaining. The ghostie photo is after that.
