Does anyone know about the outer linings that Old Town uses? Poly link 3, Super link 3, Cross Link 3? I heard that each of these materials are proprietary to Old Town and that repair material must be ordered directly from that company. ie. Not as available as repair material such as Royalex. This translates to expensive repairs...or at least I heard from a local dealer.

I think they are proprietary brands but having said that CrossLink 3 (which my boat is made of) is much more durable than Royalex and also recovers from folding better.

Old Town has a web site with a fair amount of information. I own two OT canoes-both Royalex. One is 20 plus years old. It is the Tripper, 17' 2' at 82 lbs, extremely durable. When not in use at home keep it covered from the sun and it will last decades. Can't imaginge needing to repair more than to fill gouges which I have done with fiber glass reinforced bondo-it is cheep and easy and all I needed. Royalex bends well and pops back into shape. I am sure someone will have a horror stroy but after a cumulative few months in the Yukon and Alaska with it I remain satisfied. It is heavier than kevelar, but carries more weight-always trade off to make.
