Actually, I'm 43, but I would appreciate some tips on kayaking basics. I'll be using the kayak on small, fairly strong current rivers with no rapids except for the one big one at the spillway right at the lower end of the reservoir. Are there any good websites dedicated to kayaking safely? I can't seem to find anything but commerical sites out of state.

You mention a spillway and a reservoir. If there is a weir there *please stay away* as there are incredible recirculating currents there that can drown even experts. One may look at a weir and be deceived by its rather safe looking appearance. I once read a magazine article on river weirs (low head dams) that said that if they gave 10 hydraulic engineers 10 years to design a drowning machine that they could not come up with one more efficient than a weir.
Sorry I don't have any supporting websites to back this up but I'm sure that the general paddling community will agree.

The best tip I have is don't brace-stroke upstream of your boat. Get on some flat water and feel how it turns, try to go straight and fast, what happens? Good luck and have fun! Oh, yeah, if it's like the Guadelupe here in Texas, wear that helmet!
