During the last couple of weeks, I rented a kayak three times. Only for about an hour each time

I think it would suit your needs quite well. We have 2 nine and a half footers which we carry on the deck of our cruiser here in Ontario,Canada. We have no problem putting them in or getting them out as they only weigh 39 lbs. In the USA they are known as 'Otters' and you can buy them from Old Town Canoe www.otccanoe.com/otter.html . They are stable and fun to paddle.
