If you were in the west end of Ottawa/Kanata we could meet and discuss. It is hard to explain spots on a topo map over the net. If you have a GPS I could give you exact coordinates!
I have only toured the bottom 10 km of the lake. The lake is quite large and on a windy day you do not want to be out in the middle of the open water by yourself. The deepest spot on the lake is 400' and it is at the south end. The north end is dammed, hence the water fluctuation during the summer. I would buy an island there if it was possible.
You can buy a topo map for the area from World of Maps (or whatever the name it is) It is the map for Low Quebec. I usually take the road in from Val des Bois. You can also take 307 north out of Cantley and you will see a sign for Poisson Blanc after about 25 minutes of driving, before reaching Val des Bois. That will take you into the south end of the lake and you can rent canoes there. You can also access the lake from the west side via Mont St Marie. I have not taken that route either, but will next time. It is on the TOPO as well. Then their is the whole North half of the lake (on another topo) which I will explore next summer.
Good camping spots? I have my favorites but could only show you on a map. There are plenty though and as long as you don't go on a long weekend on a Saturday you will have no problems finding one.
What to see? What not to see! Just fine wilderness with very little traffic on it. The water is beautiful & clean, great for swimming. What do you like to see? There are caves on the topo map but I could not find them anfter searching for a couple of hours. Nice cliffs to look out over.
Hope that helps, let me know how you enjoy it!

I agree with Bruce.
Great place to go camping and explore. The first time I went I had no idea where to go camping. That was part of the fun; finding a spot to put up my tent. Let me tell you, there is allot of good camp sites.
The only thing that I think Bruce forgot to mention is the parking on the south side of the lake or should I say the lack of it. You have to get there pretty early if you want to get a good spot. Another word of advice is to remove any valuable objects that are in plain site in your car. I heard people have had their cars broken in for sunglasses. Has not happen to me yet, touch wood.
Good luck
Y

thankyou,
sory bruce, I'm from Rockland (20 min to the east of orleans). If how ever you can give me the grid references on the map I'm shure I can find the spots. I will get a map. Thank you anyhow for the invite.
The lake seems to be the place to go, We will probably stop on the ile misterieuse. As for the kayak security I normaly lock then to a tree with a bike chain.
My first voyage will be this weekend to go and see first hand what is there. On the long weekend we will be going out as a gang, so wave if you see a packet with four solo and one tandem kayak.
i will post our adventure on this news group.
once again thank you for youre advice and i hope to see you there.

One of my favorite spots is between gridline 91 & 92 horizontal and 43 & 44 verticle. It is almost in the center of the square, facing south on the point on the mainland. It is easy to see. Suitable for 1 or 2 small tents. The other place I like is gridline 92 horizontal runs through an island between 43 & 44 verticle. again at the souther tip of the island a little bigger than the first spot. excellent swimming points here.
I may go out on the long weekend as well. Let me know where you guys plan on staying!

At the southernmost end of the lake, tehre is a small municipal dock with a gravel parking lot of about 20-30 cars.
Its south bout 6 minutes walk down from the Camp Air-eau-bois.
The camp is a Kids summer camp, there should be information on how to get there on the internet somewhere.
