when you are into rafting the skills that you exercise are slightly different than those needed for rafting. An experienced rafter tried to see whether kayaking actually improve the rafting skills.
I’ve heard many kayakers utter the following words: “Kayaking improves your water-reading skills for rafting because you learn to respond to smaller and subtler currents.” Well this winter, I have had a lot of opportunity to test that theory. Here is the conclusion I’ve come to: Kayaking certainly does improve your rafting skills, but even more than because of having to read smaller currents, it is because you have to become a quick and scrappy fighter in order to stay upright and/or survive.
Well I suppose it is quite simple actually, the response time in a kayak has to but much faster the attentiveness to the currents is much higher as anything can turn you over, your balancing skills are tested more as the kayak is much harder to balance at times, so sure kayaking improves you rafting ability. Still it a question of what you like more, for me there are days that nothings beats a kayak and days (and conditions) that are all about rafting.
