Yes, but the automatics are easier to drive.
Sorry. I guess it depends on how far apart your cross members are on your car rack. You could strap one to your Lamborghini, if you thought the spoiler would hold it. Watch out for older cars with the racks that strap to the gutters. If you don't tie them down to something other than the gutter rack, you could lose a canoe along with your nifty chrome trim.

I carried an 18'6' Mad River on my Buick LaSabre. First fashioned a rack to support the rear of the canoe (from a trunk lid mounted bike carrier and some 1x2 oak boards). It worked okay but I should have test driven it at highway speeds. The problem I had was that things settled abit and I did end up with a couple of small scratches on my roof. Test driving would have allowed me to make neccessary design adjustments. Total driving time was about 8 hours.

yes... there are foam supports (in various sizes) that go on the gunnels. then tie the ends to the front/back of the car. You can buy 'Y' straps with hooks at the ends. Each end of the y has a notion to vary the length. most canoe rental stores will have a sample of these. for added protection I also use a strap in the middle. You can buy 1' webbing and the notion at MEC..
