We took our new (new to us) canoe out for a paddle. Julie is quite an experienced canoeist, while it's been a long time for me, but we both had a similar view of it.

Paddling a canoe in wind and waves is nothing like doing the same in a kayak. It felt very uncomfortable. And slow. I'd be very uncomfortable indeed getting caught in conditions just a little more severe, whereas a sea kayak in the hands of a reasonably experienced paddler fears neither wind nor waves.

Once we got out of the wind, it was a very nice experience as we paddled up Constance Creek. It was nice to be able to talk quietly and experience the surrounding wildlife at the same time. The canoe moved nicely through the calm water. Returning across the bay through the wind made for paddling that could only be described as 'annoying.'

Not surprisingly then our conclusion is that we MUCH prefer our kayaks for open water paddling. We did enjoy the canoe in the more sheltered environment, but to some extent it was just the novelty of being in the same boat.

Although the canoe weighs about the same as my kayak, it was amazingly easy for me to pick up and move the canoe by myself. I felt like I could easily walk a great distance with it. I can definitely see the charm and practicality of moving moving through the back country of Algonquin with a canoe.

Tell us more about the canoe...what make and model, what it wheighs, and what you paid(??? none of my business??) I agree with you about the differences between the kayaks and a canoe, but I still could'nt part with my canoe (Swift Dumoine, ~33kg [72lbs], $6.00 ticket in a raffle, $1700.00 value).

As I understand it, it's quite a good tripping canoe, i.e. for hauling a fair amount of crap over waters and through the woods.

It's this one here: http://www.lrgeneralstore.com/page12.html

$1200 US might be about right, I think it's about $2000 CDN but I really don't know -)
