I would welcome any hints on training a dog to be a good canoe companion. I have a one-year old Catahoula mix, weighing in at 30 lbs. I paddle a 16.5 foot Wenonah Solo Plus. Would like to start taking the dog on solo, quiet water outings, but I'm worried about how she'll behave. She's very energetic and can hardly sit still. The waters I paddle around Houston are mostly full of alligators, so I need to encourage her strongly to stay in the boat. Any tips?

Put a doggie life jacket on her. The handle on the back will help you haul her back in the boat if she goes in, otherwise you both have to head for shore. Good

But only after you run her through an obedience training class. She's a good age for it. It'll teach you a lot about dogs, yourself, and behaviour of both. And make her a much more enjoyable companion.

Here's a little something I thought I'd share. It's not a dog, but none the less, it's pretty funny!!
