Hi
I was wondering if you carry a spare paddle with you. I always do, and I have a buddy that is constantly laughing at me about it I was wondering, which of us is the ridiculous one - me for being overly cautious, or him for being flippant.

I always have one strapped to the kayak.
I have yet to use it, but cracking off a paddle could really ruin a good day on the water.

I carry one in my tandem and had to use it this summer when I left my favorite paddle with another kayak back at the house.

I don't even have a spare paddle. Then again, all I ever do is flat water so it's not like it's going to break. And if it slips out of my hands while I'm taking a smoke break, I'd just use my hands to paddle over to my paddle.

I always carry a spare paddle in my canoe. You maybe on flat water but there is always a chance you may loose it or even break your paddle. You wouldn"t want that during a thunderstorm.I have an extra paddle tied to the twarts of my canoe and I leave it there. This way I know I have it even if I capsize it it attatched to my canoe if something happens to my main paddle. If all else fails keep a good knife on your hip,you may need to carve yourself a new paddle. Wize words told to me,ALWAYS BE PREPARED,YOU NEVER KNOW!!!

I keep one of those collapsable kayak paddles in the bulkhead of my kayak. Have had to pull it out once, but I'd still be floating out to sea if I hadn't.

I canoe, not kayak, but I always have a spare paddle. On the average I break a paddle about every third expedition.

I have generally used non-laminated ash paddles. I've had them break just paddling. I've broken them catching on a rock, I've broken them doing a hard gunwale pry.

I've seen them broken when people step on them, put a canoe down on them, drop a food bag on them.

I've been on trips where they were lost dumping in a rapid.

I used to do trips for Saint John's School. We figured on 1 spare per 3 people.

Carrying a spare is a good idea.

In Ontario it's the law that you have to have a spare paddle.
