After 'checking it out' I intend to buy local when at all possible, even if it costs a bit more. I was not impressed.

Support your local business. If they get wiped out by web or mail order you will regret it.

I agree with you to some degree. But, please define 'Local' Is it the 'local' REI, EMS, NorthFace, Pattagucci etc. or your local Joe- Schmoe supporting his lifestyle by operating a shop.

I feel no guilt in shopping around some corp. store and buying online. I refuse to pay 100 for a fleece vest (for example) If I can get it online for 20. You also need to realize that the reason most of the online stuff is so cheap is that they are last seasons, partcial stock etc.)

Yeah, but its bullshit to have some schmoe in the local climbing shop (regardless of size) schlepp 20 different pairs of climbing shoes out to you so you can confirm your size before you buy online. If your just price comparing that is one thing, but wasting labor is another thing.

Yes Robin, I would agree with you that scenario would be obnoxious.

And personally, for your example, I would like to add that I have the standard floor sample shoe size so if the shoe fits <on one foot> I dont ask for the other
