Can I use the cheap $5 life jackets to substitute the inflatable bags in the back of the kayak? (these life jackets support 80lbs each and I was thinking of using 4, thus saving some money, since I am low on funds.)

Yeah why not, a friend of mine used empty soda bottles for flotation in his skin on frame kayak. Just remember you may want to dry them out each time you use your kayak if they become waterlogged they will be useless!! Jules
