Is there a good stretch for flatwater kayaking in the vicinity of highway 17? I searched all over but could only find the occasional brief description of paddling routes in the southern portion involving portages.

Driving back from the Muskrat River last weekend the Bonnechere looked lovely as we drove over it....but no idea if there are good launches and how far one can paddle.

Keenan, a few years ago I camped and fished on the Bonnechere River right on the edge of Algonquin Park. It was late September and beautiful weather as well as surroundings. We fished from a small motor boat (6 hp) which was plenty for those waters. We were the only boat/people in the area all week. Heard wolves howling at night, It was great. Mostly we were in a smallish lake with nice marshes as we got closer to the Park. The river flowed kind od east southeast out of the lake and was not good fishing due to weeds but would have been great paddling. You could paddle either way due to the light current. There are several places to launch as you drive along the river toward the park (some lodges/camps with ramps as well as several primitive campsites on the water. The area has no rock formations, ridges or cliffs just woods, marsh and river but it would be a very pleasant flat water day trip

Thanks.

There's tons of info about that area, but not much available about the stretches above or below Renfrew. However, my wife and I have just completed the northern stretch between Renfrew and the chute before the Ottawa River, and posted the story on this newsgroup. We had a great time and might try some other areas of the river another time.
