Can anyone recommend a weight training exercise for preparing myself for kayaking? I hope to do some racing next summer.

The following is intended for canoeists, but should benefit kayakers also.

- When one paddles, one is pushing the craft through the water by means of pulling the water back. The best way to replicate this action is to install a 'rope and pulley' overhead and diagonally pull weights off the floor by the same back, shoulder and arm actions that one uses in paddling. - Assume your usual 'kneeling' position. Attach two hand grips in the rope ... one at the very end of the rope for the hand that is normally positioned at the 'throat' (at the top of the blade) ... and the second one at the position where the other hand holds the 'grip' (the top of the shaft). - Start with no more than 20lb and 20 reps on each side. Repeat a couple of times each day and consider working up to more weight and more reps. Even if you paddle with a partner, develop both 'sides' to avoid muscle or joint problems. If you plan to 'solo', its all the better to develop both sides, since the 'J-stroke' isn't very practical when you're kneeling just behind the 'center thwart'. - Maintaining flexibility for the 'follow-through' should be addressed by stretching and arm-arching (without weights) after each session.
