I am a citizen of the United States. Can I come to Canada without a pass port and a lot of hassles? Can I kayak and canoe without people giving me a hard time because I only speak American English? I wish I could speck French but I am too old and not the brightest penny in the roll. I wish to just paddle and have a good time but not cause undue commotion.

You should have photo ID (driver's license, for example) at least. As far as language goes, remember the old adage for US travellers abroad: 'If they don't understand you, just SAY IT AGAIN LOUDER.'

Kidding of course. Just remember, if you're thirsty, we usually drink 'pop', not 'soda'.

Have a great trip!

If you make it to Newfoundland give me a call and for the next month or so we should be able to take you paddling with whales. We have the most easerly point in North America and most of us speak some variation of English with Irish, Scottish or English leanings. There is an old French pressence on the west coast . Most places will treat you well. Web Sites to check for Newfoundland are www.kayakers.nf.ca or my vanity site http//pages.ivillage.com/mcgruer We have some of the finest sea kayak places you can imagine. Enjoy your trip. Well, unless you are going to make anti-French speeches from your kayak, I can't imagine there'd be any problem. Where do you plan to go?
