I have two daughters (5 and 7 years old), are they too young for a canoe camping trip?

> camping trip?

Nope. Not if you undertake a trip well within your own abilities and well within their known tolerances for adventure.

Yup. If you are planning to go off on a wilderness-trip-of-a-lifetime expedition that will tax the very fibres of your being.

Lots of people take younger kids than yours on canoe trips. Make a generous plan with lots of time to stop and play in the water. Plan for fun along the way. Expect them to dangle hands and paddles in the water. Limit portages unless you know they will like them (some kids do) and there will be few bugs.

Have comfy PFDs for them. Have good rain gear for them. It doesn't have to be expensive, just dry. Help them be comfortable in the canoe before you decide to go.

Repost with more detailed questions and the folks here will probably give you more advice than you can pay for.

Head for the nearest bookstore (or perhaps Mountain Equipment or Trailhead in Ottawa) and get a copy of 'Cradle to Canoe
